The concept behind this chapel is for a shared space that could be used by a diversity of students, faculty, and Laramie community members to dive into thought, spiritually or otherwise.
University life brings together the widest range of individuals for a chapel to serve. The lack of specific religious elements opens a gateway for all people to utilize the space, which was the core problem to solve here. I intended for the main theme throughout the space to be nature, as it is an element that likely all humans are drawn to. The large tree installation in the center of the structure is placed inside an opening that spans from the soil to the sky, encased in glass and surrounded by abstract art. It is a focal point for reflection, thought, and with any luck, clarity. This focal point is surrounded by floor to ceiling concrete pillars separated by glass panels that create a sense of privacy for those using the chapel but an openness to welcome newcomers.

The structure was required to be made of reinforced concrete only. I chose the shape of an arc pointedly. This arc provides a fluid circulation path that pulls individuals in a “pass through” motion, allowing its visitors a noncommittal stay. The building itself is relatively plain, the structural element of concrete apparent, to draw attention to the focal area once inside and peak the curiosity of campus goers from the exterior.
